Labor Partnership Terminated by United Way of Greater Union County

Since United Way of Union County's initial organization in 1969, union leaders as well as rank and file members in our county have recognized, supported, and been integral to the efforts of this worthwhile community partner. This collaboration became all the more important since the founding of United Way of Greater Union County in 2002, as well as the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, when labor played an integral role in all relief efforts. As of December 31, 2004, United Way of Greater Union County terminated this historic and mutually beneficial partnership.

United Auto Workers Local 595 members at General Motors in Linden, NJ answered United Way of Greater Union County's call to "Fight Hunger in our Communities." Seen here with United Way of Greater Union County's Campaign Director Susan Di Iorio, and Bob Vreeland, then AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison in front of more than 45 cartons of food staples, which were collected and distributed to the Rose Garden Home in Rahway and The Salvation Army of Plainfield.

National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive
NALC's Food Drive has become the largest one-day food collection in the country. through the efforts of letter carriers making their regular daily rounds, pantries soup kitchens and community food banks gather incredible quantities of needed supplies on this one day. In the small town of Cranford these union members collected over twelve-and-a-half tons!

This year’s drive collected more than 70.8 million pounds of food nationally, up more than 10 million pounds over last year. This is even before figuring the addition one million pounds donated by drive co-sponsor Campbell!
